The Wylam pillar light is a classic lantern for the top of a gate post, pier or garden wall. Its thick die-cast aluminium frame has an electrostatic coating in matte black or antique-style bronze, and the vertically ribbed tempered glass scatters the light into a distinctive pattern that looks just as good up close as from the road. The lantern stands around 40 cm tall on a 15.5 cm square base, a good size for most brick and stone pillars.

Solar model A charges in around six hours of sun, switches itself on at dusk and includes a remote control for choosing warm, natural or cool white light. It can also be connected to the mains, so it keeps working through long, dull spells. Hardwired models B and C take a standard E27 bulb, which is not included, and are the simpler choice where a supply is already in place.

Rated IP54 for rain and dust, the Wylam is made for year-round use on driveway pillars, garden entrances, courtyard walls and path posts, and it suits both period and new-build homes. Use an LED bulb for the best efficiency and do not exceed 40W. Hardwired fittings should be installed by a qualified electrician. Bronze pairs well with red brick and stone, while matte black suits modern render and grey tones.
