The Halden runs on an internal rechargeable battery, so placement is decided by where light is needed rather than by where a socket happens to be. A full charge gives up to 20 hours of use, which covers roughly a week of evening use on a bedside table, or a run of several dinners on a terrace, before the USB cable comes out again.

Brightness is set by touch across three levels on the body of the lamp, with no switch on a trailing cord and no separate dimmer module to wire in. The lowest setting is dim enough to leave burning overnight as a landing or nursery light, while the highest is bright enough to read by at close range.

The LED module draws very little power for its output, which is what makes the 20 hour figure achievable from a battery this size, and it produces almost no heat, so the lamp is safe to move while lit. The housing is rated for both indoor and outdoor use, so the same lamp can move from a shelf to an outdoor table without a second fitting.
